“Doing and Teaching: A Panel Discussion Linking Design and Academia”

“Doing and Teaching: A Panel Discussion Linking Design and Academia”

Have you ever wondered what academics think and say about design? Why are academics interested in design? How is design conceptualized in scholarly research and pedagogy? Can design thinking be taught? How do product design programs spur collaboration across departments, schools, and colleges on university campuses? Should business schools be more involved promoting the value of design? How can medical schools use design to provide better healthcare? Does academia have anything to offer design professionals?

The University of Oregon’s Product Design Program, Oregon Health and Science University’s Department of Management, The Art Institute of Portland, and the University of Portland’s Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation invite you to an informal cross-disciplinary, multi-institutional panel discussion focused on addressing these questions and more. The session is intended to introduce the Portland design community to the world of academia by providing a brief introduction to, and translation of, common research and teaching perspectives of design from a variety of scholarly backgrounds and interest areas. The panel hopes to engage the audience in an open-ended conversation on the role of academia in design and the potential for deeper connections between scholarship and practice within Portland's vibrant design community.
